Radar Detector Benefit
For us who lives in the US, most are already familiar with speed ticket and speed trap that can threat our wallet when we forget to manage the speed on the road. Speeding traps are indeed annoying but we can’t do nothing about it except avoid the fine by adjusting the speed and following the rule. However, since long time ago people have find a way to maximize our ability to drive faster without getting caught by these traps which is by using a radar detector.
While radar detector can’t detect if there is a law enforcement approaching you, it will be a huge help in term of preparing our speed when getting close to a fixed threat. Speed traps and cameras are almost everywhere today especially inside a city so it is best to use a radar detector when needed depend on where you are currently driving. Most detectors also featured with several modes to allow user adjust the machine and be more effective for certain environment.
Just like the name, a radar detector is a device used to detect if there is a threat near you or in your area and warn the user so we can adjust the speed, slowing down until passing the trap or monitor to avoid getting ticketed. It is indeed very useful because we will know what’s ahead and depend on the area, we can choose to ignore or proceed each signal received such as by using city mode when you are driving inside a suburban area.
While we can save money by using a radar detector, it is not a magic solution where we can avoid both traps and arrive at our destination faster since it is not always the case. Like many other devices, there are those made to be more capable and there are those made with lower performance. A good radar should able to detect threat from far away and even with a good device, we are not always going to arrive at our destination faster.

If you are already making up your mind and want to be notified about the nearby threat before arriving at the spot, now is the time to hunt for the device. For those who are only preparing budget below $100, Whistler XTR 145 and 265 can be a great option to go because not only they are fairly affordable as a radar detector, these two are also adored by their users due to have a decent performances. Both models are a family with additional another model below them, the XTR-130 which in general should be less capable compared to the other two and as you expect, XTR 265 will also better than 145.
XTR is a friendly entry for those who are not fond of high-end products with additional benefit which may or may not helpful out there in real life but for those who just want to have a good alerting device with a dependable filtering.
Whistler XTR 145 and 265 Design
From the outside, XTR line is actually built in a similar form except the lower XTR 130 because these two in our article today indeed have the same form factor and general design yet, the hardware and software inside may be different. XTR 145 is full black with white buttons on top and slightly curved hip in the middle along with a small screen at the face. The difference is XTR 265 have a silver/grey accent at the top that can be reflected when mounted in your windshield.
Whistler XTR 145 and 265 Display
While both radar detectors indeed looking like an item that has been in the market for decades, it can be easily overlooked for we are here because they are useful and not to look stylish whatsoever. The first thing we like from Whistlers XTR and 265 is despite using a traditional, older version of LED screen, they are already using Cobra’s resolution so we can easily see what information displayed without fail but what’s convenient is they have different color for different band.
This small change alone is appreciated to make sure the device doesn’t look too old for modern users. What’s different from this side is because Whistler XTR 265 has a button to adjust the brightness of their screen or making it darker when you are driving at night for example to make sure the screen is easier to the eyes and this feature is not available in XTR 145 because as you can see, it has no “Dark” button at the top like the higher model.
In addition, if you want things to be a little bit convenient, they are also compatible with Intellicord which is similar to Escort Smart Cable so we can change modes and mute alerts with an easy to touch button.
Whistler XTR 145 and 265 Modes
Moving further, just like many other radar detector, these two are featured with several modes to adjust and match where you are currently driving in but when first coming from the box, they are going to be in Highway mode, showed with “H” in your screen. This mode will give a full audio warnings anytime radar band or laser is detected so it is recommended when driving on an open road. When you press the City button, it will changed to “C” means City which is similar to Highway mode.
The City mode has 2 options one and two. The City One is similar to Highway mode in term of alerting but it decreased the X band performance so we can avoid false alerting from door openings and security systems while the next mode is still the same but this time the X band detection is completely shut off. Finally, when pressed once again, the mode will comes back to Highway.
Whistler XTR 145 and 265 Detection
Up to this part, beside the screen mode above, Whistler XTR 145 and 265 are pretty much the same but now, there is a detecting capability which is not available in the lower-end model and it is Pop Mode detection. Pop radar actually introduced back then in 1999 by MPH in its radar guns which until today, can defeat more than 85% of the radar detectors used by drivers. This technology works by sending out a quick radar at approximately 67 milliseconds.
The drawback of this technology is they won’t be able to accurately tell the speed of a vehicle so only recommended to obtain an estimate speed of a target vehicle. It is very powerful to caught speeding but due to the speed, us user can’t react in time even when having told by the radar detector because chances are the law enforcement already in front of you. But, it is probably useful at least to prepare yourself for the next usual procedure.
Whistler XTR 145 and 265 Additional Features
Another difference between Whistler XTR 145 and 265 is the additional ability in the higher end model called Setting Saver which is just like the name, allow the user to save any personalized adjustment thus, when the device is turned off and then activated again, we don’t have to re-adjust them for the second times. This feature is currently available in XTR 265 and the higher model XTR 335. The further adjustments are accessible through the Menu button at the top in both radar detectors to personalize your device.
For example, we can choose activate or deactivate the VG 2while the further setting need you to press the Dark or Quiet button. The Pop detection mode we mentioned above is also accessed with this button but again, it only present in XTR 265.
Now, let’s compare Whistler XTR 145 with 265. As you may already know, the difference between them are on the Dim/Dark mode in XTR 265, the ability to detect Pop gun and allow user to save their adjustment or setting so we don’t have to do them again when turning the device on; all of them are not present in XTR 145.
Whistler XTR 145 vs 265
All in all, the decision is all yours to make because we may have different need and preference so it is best to follow your requirement. However, we do recommend you to pick Whistler XTR 265 for the Dim mode and setting saver since Pop radar detection is not very useful in real life.
